On Friday night, September 23, 2011 I learned that we have been wrong for over 30 years. This was the first night our alumni reunion, which we hold every three years. There was a group of Saginaw Old Timers hanging out in the canteen. Every time we hold a reunion, people bring memorabilia from their time at camp – photo albums, awards they won, patches they earned and even old Saginaw clothing. One person in the group, who has been sending his children and grand children to Saginaw for years, had brought a Camp Saginaw brochure that was from the 1940’s or 1950’s. It was amazing to see! The pages were filled with old photos of camp, activities that the campers participated in, sports, campers working on a farm, and even some pool shots with campers in swim suites that would make you laugh out loud.
There was also a lot to read. Back then there were no websites so all the information about camp was written in the brochure. There was a written section on the owners, the philosophy, the schedule and all other things that you would typically find in a brochure. The brochure was twenty pages long and loaded with information.
The most compelling piece of the brochure was the first line of the first page when the owners wrote about the date that Camp Saginaw was founded. As you are all aware, Camp Saginaw was founded in 1930, right? NO! WRONG!
We learned on Friday night, September 23, 2011 that Camp Saginaw was founded in 1927!
